Course Writing Assignment: Issues in Interactivity

DUE 11/24 Monday week 12

Objective: to gain deeper insight into an issue surrounding interactive media through research and short writing.

Write on the topics below. The voice of your article will vary depending upon general or specific focus, on particular aspects that you see in the topic based upon an insider's view (for example), or on the most compelling issue for communities in digital production, etc. You may get ideas from some of the class web site's"Issues in Interactivity" but you must do further research and cannot use the "Issues" articles as sources.

The paper will be four pages double spaced, using a 12 point serif font (i.e. Times, Georgia), cited using MLA standards. The bibliography should have five different sources, only two online sources.

Topics: Interactive Visualization (new and old systems, projects and research groups)

Interactive Art (artist projects on the web such as David Clark's A is for Apple)

Machine Human interaction and non typical interactivity (medicine frontiers, notions of cyborgs, nature's and culture's "codings"

Popular Culture of Cyberspace (On line communities, The Matrix, the appropriation of computers in film, The digital lifestyle).

Foucault's Analysis of "Las Meninas" in The Order of Things.

Assessment:

5 points grammar

15 points concept, organization, and depth of research.

NOTE: During Portfolio week you must email the instructor (me) a specific topic/focus for your paper.
