Working
in Groups for Studio Project One.
Cognitive psychology has shown the benefits of
group interaction in learning, specifically those benefits in
dyads (groups of two students). Because of varying abilities
in the
students
of teams, but also the necessity of at least two people in project
development, teams of two work to engage learners and teachers
who learn.
The student with more knowledge and skill in
the study topic, practices his or her articulation of knowledge
through demonstrations to
the student with less knowledge, and in turn learns through
formulation and synthesis. The student with less knowledge then
learns through being provided stimulation on the topic, and being
provided answers to questions triggered by the project or learning
task.
What is at work here is the role of discussion
and social engagement in formulation, thinking and learning to
think, that facilitates learning. For Studio Project One, you
will work in teams of two to create a web site that visually
and interactively and hyper-textually tells a story.
You will each create a design diagram (Studio
Sub Project One) on your own (each student) and then decide which
of yours to use for the site, or how to combine the stories through
subplots.(team work on the site only--except for revisions
to the diagram with which you proceed). Research will resume
on the visuals for the site, and the production of graphics for
the site once you choose from each student's design for site
architecture.
The pattern: Preparation
for working in groups:
Each student sketches out a story in a design diagram.
Preliminary Group Activity: Groups
of two students discuss which story they would like to make
into a
site or how
to combine stories. (Feel free to combine stories as subplots
of the main stories).
Main Group activity: Student's put together a
site, each responsible for graphics and web authoring and research.
